artist. Kristone Capistrano

title. Forgotten Faces

date. 5/7/18 - 24/7/18 Opening Friday 6th July 6-9pm

about.Forgotten Faces is the result of Kristone's ongoing research into the presence of Filipino and ethnic migrants in late colonial Australia. The exhibition will feature a series of large- scale drawings of ethnic prisoners executed at Melbourne Gaol between 1875 and 1894. These works are based on the historical death masks and photographs found in the state archives of Victoria. Alongside the quintessential Ned Kelly, the drawings will also include portraits of a Filipino cook, a son of an African American slave, an Indian hawker and a Chinese opium dealer. These works reflect upon the mask of colonial Australia and the alternative histories that lie beneath it.
